How do I get this guy without looking desperate?

We met at a volunteer place and started talking to each other more, he doesn't have a cell phone so he gave me his best friend's number who he is (always) with. His friend told me it's fine because they're always together. He is the most sweetest person ever so its not a problem. I was gonna text him and say tell Rich (his friend) to call me from his house phone. Then I thought no I'll do something else. But what do I do I really like this kid.
